The Eye Foundation offers DNB in Ophthalmology. Two Primary Candidates and Two Post Diploma in Ophthalmology (DO) candidates are taken every year in January. The Candidates are selected through a centralized exam & counselling conducted by the National Board of Examinations, New Delhi.
In the first month, the post graduate students undergo an orientation programme in which they are introduced to the various departments and the functioning of the hospital. Then they are posted in the outpatient department with senior consultants. They are trained in visual assessment, refraction, slit lamp examination, 90 D and indirect ophthalmoscopic fundus examination.
In the first year, they are exposed to various procedures like keratometry, A-Scan, Topography, Fundus Photography, Fluorescein angiography, Optical Coherence tomography, Anterior segment photography, ORA, Gonioscopy and Tonometry. (They also start training in Small Incision Cataract Surgery in the first year)
In the second year, they are rotated through various specialty departments including, Cornea, Retina, Paediatric Ophthalmology, Oculoplasty, Glaucoma and Refractive surgery.
The DNB candidates are involved in the cataract and specialty screening camps. In the final year they are exposed to hands on phacoemulsification, pterygium surgery, intravitreal injections and retinal lasers.
The teaching programme includes 4 classes in a week which includes case presentations, seminar and journal clubs.
