While completely preventing cataracts isn't always possible, certain lifestyle choices and practices may help reduce your risk:

tips-to-prevent-cataract

  • Maintain a healthy diet: Some studies indicate that that diet of fruits, vegetables and omega-3 fatty acids may provide certain protection.
  • Limit UV exposure: It is best advised that you wear sunglasses that block UVA and UVB rays to shield your eyes from damage from the sun.
  • Quit smoking: Considering the fact that cataracts are associated with a strong risk factor for cigarettes, getting rid of smoking may cause significant reduction in the chance to develop this disease.
  • Manage chronic conditions: There are other lingering health issues such as diabetes, which can increase your risk of developing cataracts; and it is paramount to effectively regulate these conditions.
  • Regular eye exams: Early detection and management of underlying ocular conditions may be preventative of eye conditions that may have predisposed the clients to cataract or even help to slow down the development of the condition.

The Eye Foundation encourages people to book an appointment if they have concerns about cataracts or any questions. Believed to be caused by osmotic changes within the lens surface, cataracts can be quickly assessed and treated by our qualified ophthalmologists, some of which provide modern surgical procedures including LASIK. Keep in mind that early detection and treatment are very important for achieving a better vision and wholesome life.
