Contoura LASIK vs. SMILE

Responsive image

Contoura LASIK and SMILE are two of the most advanced laser vision correction procedures available today. Both procedures use lasers to reshape the cornea, but they do so in different ways.

Contoura LASIK uses a 3D map of the cornea to create a personalized treatment plan. This allows the surgeon to correct even the most complex corneal irregularities. SMILE, on the other hand, uses a single laser to create a small incision in the cornea and remove a lenticule (a thin slice of corneal tissue).

Both procedures are highly effective, but they have different advantages and disadvantages. Contoura LASIK is generally more accurate and can correct a wider range of refractive errors, but it is also more invasive and has a slightly longer recovery time. SMILE is less invasive and has a faster recovery time, but it is not as accurate as Contoura LASIK and cannot correct as wide a range of refractive errors.

Here is a table comparing the two procedures:

Which procedure is right for you?

The best way to decide which procedure is right for you is to consult with an experienced eye surgeon. The surgeon will evaluate your individual needs and make a recommendation based on your specific situation.

Here are some general guidelines:

  • If you have corneal irregularities, such as thin corneas or ectasia, Contoura LASIK is the better option.
  • If you are concerned about invasiveness and recovery time, SMILE is the better option.
  • If you have a high refractive error, Contoura LASIK is the better option.
