What are the early signs of keratoconus

Keratoconus is a degenerative eye disease in which the cornea progressively thins and bulges to assume a conical shape from its usual dome shape. Due to this deformity, light entering the eye and aiming at the light-sensitive retina gets deflected, resulting in poor, distorted vision. Recognizing early signs may lead to timely and effective treatment and thus minimize vision loss. Some early signs of ARMD follow.

Blurred Vision and Visual Distortion

Many people will experience one of the first signs: a slight blurring or distortion of vision. It's not only a little more squinting to read signs or screens; it's a noticeable deterioration of acuity in the field of vision that impairs your ability to readily do things in everyday life.

Enhance Light Sensitivity

Are you squinting more in bright light or feeling uncomfortable in well-lit areas? Increased sensitivity to light is one of the most evident first signs of keratoconus, frequently combined with a halo effect from light and other problems visualized with nighttime driving.

Is that irritating or what? Getting a new prescription

If you find that you are increasingly going back to the optometrist for adjustments to your glasses or contact lenses because they are "no longer working," this is a red flag that should not be ignored. It would help if you did not overlook a rapid change in vision prescriptions.

Irritation and discomfort in the eye

.

This can result in chronic eye irritation, which can lead, for example, to a gritty feeling or even the feeling that something is "in" your eye.

Frequent rubbing: The chronic irritation can lead to a sense of grittiness or even result in frequent rubbing of the eyes.

Visual Changes: You may notice changes in your vision clarity.

Light Sensitivity: Pay attention to whether light starts to disturb your eyes more than usual.

Prescription shifts: Find out how often new glasses or contact lenses must be fitted.

Eye Comfort: Notice more discomfort or a foreign body sensation in the eye.
