Lasik & Smile Treatment
A normal person or an Emmetrope sees well because rays from the outside world fall exactly on the light sensitive retina allowing them to see sharp and clear images of the world. In people with refractive error (or poor vision, such as nearsightedness or farsightedness), the light rays do not get focused on to the retina and blurred images are formed.

Myopia and its Treatment

Myopia, commonly known as near-sightedness or short-sightedness, refers to a condition where the patient is unable to see distant objects. Myopia is rare before the school-going age, gradually increasing during school life. Myopia maybe low (-5 diopters), moderate (-5 to -10 diopters), or high (more than -10 diopters). Persons with moderate to high myopia are liable to have retinal complications and should have a dilated eye examination at least once a year.

Hyperopia and its Treatment

Hyperopia refers to the condition known commonly as long-sightedness, wherein the patient has difficulty seeing objects or reading at close distances without the aid of glasses.

Astigmatism and its Treatment

Astigmatism is an optical defect, whereby vision is blurred due to the inability of the optics of the eye to focus a point object into a sharp focused image on the retina. The treatment options for all these refractive errors are

  • Spectacles,
  • Contact lenses,
  • Refractive surgery.
Spectacles are inexpensive and safe and offer clear vision and are low maintenance.

Optical Services:

A scientific optical dispensing unit with an entire array of the latest in lenses and frames laid out in a pleasant and attractive display is also available in-house.

Those who do not want to wear spectacles can opt for contact lenses, which maybe soft and semi-soft or rigid gas permeable. Soft contact lenses may be extended wear or disposable. For high errors of astigmatism, toric contact lenses are available.

Disposable lenses (daily or weekly) are discarded as indicated. All types of lenses should be removed at the end of the day, cleaned and soaked in the specified solution as instructed during their purchase.

Contact Lens Clinic: A state of the art Contact Lens Clinic is functional in the premises with a wide array of soft, semi soft, toric, cosmetic and customized lenses. Most lenses are readily available to suit the individual needs of the patients from the well stocked library.

LASIK Surgery

LASIK (Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis) is a very simple procedure of correcting refractive errors by reshaping the cornea with the help of a cold (Excimer) laser, with submicron accuracy. The safety and accuracy of the LASIK surgery or treatment depends largely on the machine used.

LASIK Milestone @ The Eye Foundation

Lasik has been performed at “The Eye Foundation” since 1997 and till date over 40,000 Lasik procedures have been satisfactorily performed. The Chiron 217 – C Lasik Work Station integrated with the Hansatome with which we started our Lasik operations in 1997 was the first in India to be installed at that time at our centre.

In the year 2002, we went ahead and introduced Zyoptix treatment, an advanced software for further improving the visual standards. In the year 2004, we have installed the very new Chiron Z 100 Lasik machine with unique, unbelievable modifications.

In the year 2008 we introduced INTRALASE, a 100 % blade free Lasik procedure. In 2011 we introduced the fastest &safest Excimer laser WAVE LIGHT EX500.

In 2014, we introduced the next generation Laser Vision Correction called ReLex SMILE, a 100% Flapless & Bladeless Lasik procedure.

Your eyes deserve the very best ReLEx smile is a breakthrough in laser vision correction offering a whole new level of precision, safety and comfort. With ReLEx smile you can look forward to superior visual outcomes and faster post-operative recovery that no other correction techniques can offer. In fact, you might just experience the world through a whole new lens – your natural one. Read more on LASIK / SMILE

Though there are various machines available for Lasik, EX500 is the fastest workstation trusted and accepted worldwide.

What is EX500 or OPTILasik?

The question is, though, if your eyes are as unique as you are, why should they be treated with the exact same procedure everyone else gets? If you are thinking about laser vision correction, choose the procedure that was designed to work with your eyes unique attributes. You now have an option of EX500 OptiLasik Wavelight EX-500 Laser system with many new functions for fast, safe and reliable refractive laser treatment. Its design has been optimized to combine with Femtosecond laser (Bladeless Lasik). The 500 Hz Wavelight EX-500 excimer laser is the world’s fastest excimer laser today. The speed ensures perfect centration and optimized results, as the key factor during lasik treatment is the patients attention and fixation. Forexample, a patient with 10 diopters of error will need to fixate for a mere 14 seconds!! Besides, the speed prevents the corneal flap from getting dehydrated thus optimizing the results manifold.Increased efficiency through wavelight algorithm and the faster laser head results in less discomfort for the patient and optimized results.

Powers that could be Corrected :

With this machine we have the capability to correct –1.00 to –15.00 diopters, from +1.00 to +8.00 diopters and up to 8.00 diopters of astigmatism. This is the only system that is capable of correcting plus powers, cylindrical powers and high minus powers. Though this is designed to correct all refractive errors accurately, in very high powers, there may be small residual powers after the treatment due to limits of corneal thickness and wound healing response of the eye.

LASIK Eye Power Correction

EPILASIK or advanced surface ablation is a variant of LASIK available at our centre, wherein a thin epithelial flap of less than 60u is created with an epikeratome and treated with laser ablation. This maximizes corneal tissue conservation and expands the possibility to treat thinner corneas with optimal visual outcome

Cutting Edge Technology…but without the “Cut”!!!

LASIK Cutting Edge Technology

Traditional LASIK involves the use of a microkeratome for the creation of corneal flaps. The microkeratome is a hand held blade that moves across the eye, cutting the corneal flap as it goes. While LASIK is extremely safe, if complications do occur the microkeratome is often the cause. Our hospital is one of the few in India to offer the advantage of the Femto Second – laser that enables the surgeon to create your corneal flap WITHOUT A BLADE ever touching your eye. In this method, tiny pulses of laser light pass harmlessly through the outer portion of your cornea to a preprogrammed depth and form a uniform layer of microscopic bubbles just beneath the surface of your eye. The Femto second laser flap creation takes about 15 to 20 seconds and is computer controlled for maximum precision. This method gives you vision of 20/20 or better with excellent overall quality of vision.

Alternatives to LASIK:

For patients in whom the corneal thickness is not sufficient or the refractive error is very high, LASIK is often not an option available to correct their refractive errors.Phakic Intraocular lenses that are fixed in front of the natural clear lens are a safe and effective option in these patients. This is an outpatient procedure that requires 15 to 30 minutes and gives good quality of vision without any significant side effects. We offer you this option of refractive error correction with the use of ICL TM ( Implantable Contact Lens)In patients with Keratoconus and hence unsuited for LASIK, we offer Corneal Collagen Cross linking with Riboflavin (C3R) [More details under Cornea]1. Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Yes, if you
  • are 18 years or above
  • Have myopia or hyperopia, with or without astigmatism.
  • Have had a stable glass prescription for atleast one year
  • Have sufficient corneal thickness.
No, if you
  • Are under 18 years of age
  • Have very high refractive errors (>10D; Then ICL is the ideal option)
  • Have unstable refraction
  • Have other ocular surface disorders, infections or inflammations of the eye

During your visit to our hospital, you will first be taken through a routine checkup of your refraction by a team of qualified optometrists. This will be followed by a corneal topography (Pentacam) and the dilatation of your pupils for a detailed retinal exam by a consultant. Detection of retinal degenerations or breaks may require immediate prophylactic treatment of these. If the retinal exam is normal or following the prophylactic laser treatment, you can discuss your treatment options with a consultant and decide on a surgery date convenient to you. Following dilatation, it may be difficult to read or drive for several hours after the visit. You may wish to bring sunglasses and/or a driver for your vehicle.

The procedure is an outpatient one which requires you to come to the hospital only on the day of the surgery with a relative or a friend. The procedure is done under topical anesthesia (after the application of drops) and is not painful. You need to simply lie down on a couch and look up at the microscope. The whole procedure is usually over in 10-12 minutes for both the eyes.

You can return home the same day. You may feel some discomfort in the initial few hours that is easily reduced by oral pain killers. You will have to come for a follow up visit the next day after surgery and thereafter as advised by your surgeon.

You are asked to refrain from splashing water in the eyes and avoid any kind of injury to them for a period of two weeks after the LASIK procedure. In all other respects, like reading, writing, watching television, working on a computer, traveling and doing household chores, you can return back to normalcy the very next day after the treatment.

It is extremely unlikely. When patients are treated for very high powers there could be a residual power which can be assessed and will be informed to the patient even before the procedure
