LASIK (Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis) is a very simple procedure of correcting refractive errors by reshaping the cornea with the help of a cold (Excimer) laser, with submicron accuracy. The safety and accuracy of the LASIK treatment depends largely on the machine used. LASIK Milestone @ The Eye Foundation Lasik has been performed at “The Eye Foundation” since 1997 and till date over 30,000 Lasik procedures have been satisfactorily performed. The Chiron 217 – C Lasik Work Station integrated with the Hansatome with which we started our Lasik operations in 1997 was the first in India to be installed at that time at our centre.
Though there are various machines available for Lasik, EX500 is the fastest workstation trusted and accepted worldwide. What is EX500 or OPTILasik?
Powers that could be corrected : With this machine we have the capability to correct –1.00 to –15.00 diopters, from +1.00 to +8.00 diopters and up to 8.00 diopters of astigmatism. This is the only system that is capable of correcting plus powers, cylindrical powers and high minus powers. Though this is designed to correct all refractive errors accurately, in very high powers, there may be small residual powers after the treatment due to limits of corneal thickness and wound healing response of the eye.
EPILASIK or advanced surface ablation is a variant of LASIK available at our centre, wherein a thin epithelial flap of less than 60u is created with an epikeratome and treated with laser ablation. This maximizes corneal tissue conservation and expands the possibility to treat thinner corneas with optimal visual outcome. Cutting edge technology but without the Cut!!!
Traditional LASIK involves the use of a microkeratome for the creation of corneal flaps. The microkeratome is a hand held blade that moves across the eye, cutting the corneal flap as it goes. While LASIK is extremely safe, if complications do occur the microkeratome is often the cause. Our hospital is one of the few in India to offer the advantage of the Femto Second - IntraLase method that enables the surgeon to create your corneal flap WITHOUT A BLADE ever touching your eye. In this method, tiny pulses of laser light pass harmlessly through the outer portion of your cornea to a preprogrammed depth and form a uniform layer of microscopic bubbles just beneath the surface of your eye. The IntraLase flap creation takes about 15 to 20 seconds and is computer controlled for maximum precision. This method gives you vision of 20/20 or better with excellent overall quality of vision.
What is special about LASIK at The Eye Foundation???
At The Eye Foundation, you can get the advantage of the very best of technology in the most experienced hands. There has been continuous process of up gradation of our software in trend with the latest developments in technology. Optilasik which promises excellent quality of vision, is a customized laser ablation, specific, tailor made to each individual eye. Along with the excimer laser system a high precision integrated diagnostic system optimizes the vision correction. The Wavelight analyzer device delivers highly accurate measurement to avoid the risk of false treatment. Our team of expert surgeons lead by Dr. D. Ramamurthy and Dr. Chitra Ramamurthy have had the special advantage of performing more than 30,000 Lasik procedures catering to different and difficult situations in patients from India and from different parts of the world. They have been trained at the very best centers in USA and Europe & delivered lectures and conducted workshops to train other ophthalmologists in lasik around the world in USA, UK, China, Australia, Singapore, Malaysia, Philippines, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Nepal etc.
Alternatives to LASIK:For patients in whom the corneal thickness is not sufficient or the refractive error is very high, LASIK is often not an option available to correct their refractive errors. Phakic Intraocular lenses that are fixed in front of the natural clear lens are a safe and effective option in these patients. This is an outpatient procedure that requires 15 to 30 minutes and gives good quality of vision without any significant side effects. We offer you this option of refractive error correction with the use of ICL TM ( Implantable Contact Lens) In patients with Keratoconus and hence unsuited for LASIK, we offer Corneal Collagen Cross linking with Riboflavin (C3R) [More details under Cornea] 1.
