If you are living with diabetes and concerned about the risk of vision loss from diabetic retinopathy (damage to the retina caused by diabetes), you've come to the right place. At The Eye Foundation, Bellandur (Bangalore) our retina team specialises in diagnosing and treating diabetic retinopathy at every stage using advanced imaging, laser and surgical interventions.
What is Diabetic Retinopathy?
Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes wherein high blood sugar levels damage the tiny blood vessels in the retina (the light-sensitive lining at the back of your eye). Over time this can cause leakage, swelling, new abnormal blood vessels, and ultimately vision loss or blindness if left untreated.
Symptoms you should not ignore:
Blurred or fluctuating vision
Floaters or dark spots in vision
Difficulty reading or recognizing colours
Impaired night vision
In advanced stages: sudden loss of vision or vitreous hemorrhage
Why early detection matters:
With early screening and timely treatment the progression of diabetic retinopathy can often be slowed or prevented many patients maintain good vision rather than losing it.
Who is at risk?
Anyone with diabetes (Type 1 or Type 2) for more than 5-10 years
Poorly controlled blood sugar, high blood pressure, high cholesterol
Pregnancy can accelerate changes in some cases
Those who skip regular eye checks
Treatment Options
At The Eye Foundation, we tailor your treatment plan to the stage of retinopathy, your vision needs and overall health. Below is an overview of the options:
Regular Monitoring & Lifestyle Support
In very early non-proliferative retinopathy, careful monitoring, good glycaemic control, blood-pressure and cholesterol management plus regular retinal imaging may suffice.
Laser Photocoagulation (Focal/Scatter/PRP)
When leaking vessels or abnormal new vessels appear, laser therapy (pan-retinal photocoagulation or focal photocoagulation) helps seal off leaking vessels and reduce the stimulus for new vessel growth.
Intravitreal Injections (Anti-VEGF / Steroids)
In cases with macular oedema (swelling of the central retina) or proliferative retinopathy, injections of anti-VEGF drugs or steroids into the eye reduce fluid, shrink vessels and protect vision.
Vitrectomy / Retinal Surgery
For advanced cases with vitreous haemorrhage, retinal detachment or tractional changes, vitrectomy (removal of the vitreous gel) with laser and membrane peeling may be necessary.
Comprehensive After-care & Rehabilitation
Following any intervention, we offer visual rehabilitation, low-vision support if needed, counselling on systemic control and lifetime monitoring to preserve the result.

Diabetic retinopathy is damage to the retina caused by long-term diabetes. You might not notice early symptoms, which is why regular eye-checks (at least annually) are essential for people with diabetes.
At minimum annually if your diabetes is well-controlled and no retinopathy is detected. If any early changes appear you may need examinations every 6-12 months or sooner as advised by your retinal specialist.
No many cases, especially early ones, can be managed with laser therapy or injections without surgery. Surgery (vitrectomy) is reserved for advanced complications.
Treatment aims to stabilise vision and prevent further loss. If damage is mild, good visual outcomes are common. In more advanced cases some vision may not recover fully, but progression can be halted.
Yes, many insurance plans cover treatment as it is medically necessary to prevent vision loss. Coverage depends on your specific policy our team will assist you with documentation and claims.
