What are vitreoretinal diseases?

Generally the vitreo retinal disease affects the back part of the eye involving both the retina and vitreous layer. The retina is a thin layer that is responsible for vision whatever you see the light from them will reach the retina and then only their structure is formed and the vitreous which is a thin gel that fills the space between the lens and retina. Common vitreoretinal diseases are,

  • Diabetic retinopathy is a condition that occurs due to diabetes as the sugar level spikes it starts affecting the blood vessels that supply blood to the retina and brings up vision impairment.
  • Age-related macular degeneration, in this condition the central vision gets influenced. Central vision is important for various activities like reading and driving.
  • Retinal detachment, this condition occurs when the retinal part detaches from its original position which can cause permanent vision loss if not treated properly.
  • A macular hole is a condition where a small break may occur in the macula and causes blurry distorted vision.
  • Vitreous hemorrhage this condition occurs due to the bleeding into the vitreous layer most commonly because of diabetic retinopathy and other vascular conditions.

Current treatments

  1. Laser therapy- Advanced laser therapies are available that aim to stop the leakage of blood vessels in diabetic retinopathy alternatively to create a barrier around the retinal tears.
  2. Intravitreal injections- Anti-VEGF injections are provided they help in minimizing abnormal blood vessel growth and fluid leakage.
  3. Vitrectomy- This is the surgical procedure used to remove the vitreous gel to treat effectively conditions like retinal detachment, vitreous hemorrhage, or macular holes.
  4. Photodynamic therapy- In this therapy, a light-activated drug will be incorporated inside the eyes to treat the abnormal blood vessels in the eye.
