One of the common questions regarding eye examination in diabetic patients is how often should I get eye exams,  below is the answer to your question get to know.

How does diabetes influence eyesight?

If you are having diabetes know that the glucose level in the blood has the capacity to damage the blood vessels in your retina it is responsible for perfect vision.  This may lead to temporary or permanent vision loss.

Diabetic retinopathy

This eye condition is due to damage to blood vessels that supply blood to the retina.  The retina is located at the beginning; it is a thin layer of tissue that receives the light from the lens and converts it into a signal sent to the brain. This is the process behind clear vision but when the blood vessels of the retina get damaged it cannot get a proper blood supply.

There are two types of retinopathy, one is proliferative where the blood vessels are completely damaged and closed down,  and due to this new fragile blood vessels will be formed and it may leak and affect your vision. In the case of nonproliferative retinopathy, the blood vessels will get swollen. This also has a greater impact on your vision. Sometimes retinopathy may not show the symptoms only when you start experiencing disturbances with your vision you will be getting an eye examination.

Diabetic macular edema

Diabetic macular edema is another condition that is related to diabetes,  here the capillary walls will get weaker and leakage of fluid into the macula will occur.  The macula is responsible for transforming the light into the images that you see in that case the leakage into it will cause a blurry vision.

Generally, people with diabetes consult a doctor regarding their diabetic condition, and where the doctor may also check their eyes.  Still, it is good to get a proper eye examination once every one or two years from an experienced ophthalmologist. They're going to use advanced equipment to conduct a comprehensive eye examination to check the backside of your eye to notice the difference that is caused by diabetes inside the eye. This could diagnose the underlying or arousing eye conditions. The early diagnosis will help in early treatment so that your vision will be preserved.

Dilated retinal examination

The dilated retinal examination is usually done by giving the eye drops to make your eyes wide so that an ophthalmologist can observe the backside of an eye. Through this doctor can observe the blood vessels present in the front and middle of the eye,  the backside of an eye on the optic nerve area. Along with this to observe the surface of the eye, the corneal part slit lamp will also be used altogether will reveal the condition of your eye to make a customized treatment plan.
