Summer After LASIK What Your Eyes Actually Need You to Know
So you've had LASIK, SMILE Pro, or Femto LASIK and now summer is here. Great timing for clearer vision, right? Well, yes but only if you treat your eyes the way they deserve to be treated during these next few months.
Here's the thing nobody really warns you about: summer and healing eyes don't always get along. The heat, the dust, the pool water, the brutal afternoon sun all of it can quietly work against the results your surgeon worked so hard to give you. And the good news? A little awareness goes a long way.
Why Summer Feels Different After Eye Surgery
Your cornea has just been through something precise and significant. Whether you had Femto LASIK, Contoura LASIK, SMILE Pro, or SMILE Clear, your eye is in an active healing phase for the first 3 to 6 months. During that window, it's more sensitive than usual and summer has a way of testing that sensitivity at every turn.
The UV index shoots up. The air gets drier especially indoors with the AC running non-stop. Dust and pollen are everywhere. And somehow, every plan seems to involve a swimming pool.
None of these things are dealbreakers. You just need to know how to handle them.
What to Actually Do This Summer
Sunglasses aren't optional anymore. After laser eye surgery, this isn't a style choice it's a healing tool. Get a pair of wraparound sunglasses with 100% UVA and UVB protection (look for the UV400 label). UV rays can slow down corneal healing and cause surface inflammation that sets back your recovery more than you'd expect.
Your eye drops are your best friend. Dry eye after LASIK is genuinely one of the most common complaints and summer makes it worse. Air conditioning pulls moisture out of the air, your tear film struggles to keep up, and suddenly your vision feels unstable and your eyes feel scratchy. Use your preservative-free lubricating drops at least 4 to 6 times a day. Keep a bottle in your bag, on your desk, in your car. Don't wait until your eyes feel uncomfortable by then, they've already been dry for a while.
Stay out of the midday sun when you can. Between 11 AM and 3 PM, UV radiation is at its peak. If you're heading out during those hours, pair your sunglasses with a wide-brimmed hat. It sounds simple because it is and it makes a real difference.
Drink more water than you think you need. This one surprises people. Your tear film is directly affected by how hydrated you are. In summer, you're sweating more and drinking less than you should. That dehydration shows up in your eyes first especially after LASIK. Keep a water bottle with you all day.
The pool can wait. We know it's hot and the pool is right there. But swimming pools are full of chlorine and bacteria that your healing cornea is not equipped to handle right now. After SMILE Pro, Femto LASIK, or Contoura LASIK, stay out of pools, the sea, and lakes for at least 4 weeks. If you absolutely must swim, use properly sealed waterproof goggles. Not the loose kind. The kind that actually keeps water out.
Don't skip your follow-up appointments. Summer travel is wonderful but don't let it push your post-op visits off the calendar. These check-ins exist for a reason. Your surgeon needs to see how your cornea is healing, catch any dry eye progression early, and make sure your vision correction is holding steady. A missed appointment in month two can mean a much bigger problem discovered in month four.
Who Needs to Be Extra Careful
If you had your surgery between March and June, you're heading into peak summer right in the middle of your healing window so the timing matters more for you than for someone who had surgery in October.
You'll also want to be especially careful if you already had dry eyes before surgery, if your job keeps you outdoors most of the day, or if your summer plans involve a lot of sport, travel, or time near water.
Don't Ignore These Warning Signs
Most post-LASIK summers are completely uneventful. But if any of the following happen, call your doctor the same day don't wait and see:
- Your vision suddenly becomes blurry or hazy
- Your eyes stay red or keep watering for no obvious reason
- Light starts bothering you more than usual
- You feel pain, pressure, or something-in-your-eye sensation
- There's any visible discharge
These don't always mean something serious but they always mean something worth checking.
LASIK and SMILE Pro give you something genuinely life-changing freedom from glasses and contact lenses. But that result isn't just created in the operating room. It's protected in the months that follow by the choices you make every day.
This summer, wear those sunglasses. Use those drops. Skip the pool for a few more weeks. Book your appointments.
Your eyes did something remarkable. Give them the summer they need to finish the job.
