Summer Eye Emergencies: From Diabetic Retinopathy Flare-Ups to Glaucoma & Retinal Detachment Warning Signs

Responsive image

For people with chronic eye conditions, summer brings a whole new set of risks. The heat, changes in lifestyle, missed doses of medication, more exercise, and changes in diet that come with summer can all cause or make worse serious eye problems like diabetic retinopathy flare-ups, acute angle-closure glaucoma attacks, retinal detachment, uveitis flare-ups, and neuro-ophthalmological emergencies.

The Eye Foundation's specialist teams in vitreo-retina, glaucoma, uvea and ocular inflammation, and neuro-ophthalmology urge patients with known eye conditions to be especially vigilant during summer and to understand the warning signs that demand immediate medical attention.

Diabetic Retinopathy and Macular Edema During the Summer

For India's growing number of diabetics, summer brings serious metabolic problems that directly affect the progression of diabetic retinopathy and diabetic macular edema (DME).

Why summer makes diabetic eye disease worse:

  • Dehydration raises blood sugar levels, which speeds up damage to the blood vessels in the retina.
  • Eating a lot of sugar, fried foods, and drinking alcohol on vacation can make it harder to control blood sugar levels.
  • Traveling or taking a summer vacation can mess up your medication schedule, which can cause dangerous spikes in glucose.
  • When heat causes blood vessels to widen, it can make diabetic macular edema worse by letting more fluid leak out of weak retinal blood vessels.
  • This summer, keep an eye out for these signs that diabetic retinopathy is getting worse:Summer tips for glaucoma patients:
  • Store all IOP-lowering eye drops in a cool, dry location (not the refrigerator unless specified)
  • Never miss a dose  even when travelling or on vacation

Wear UV-protective sunglasses, as UV radiation may affect optic nerve health

Watch for symptoms of acute angle-closure glaucoma: sudden severe eye pain, headache, nausea, blurred vision, and halos around lights  this is a medical emergency requiring immediate care

Patients undergoing glaucoma treatment including laser trabeculoplasty or surgical interventions like trabeculectomy  at The Eye Foundation should schedule a post-summer IOP check to confirm pressure targets are being maintained.

Retinal Detachment  A Summer Sports Risk

Summer's active outdoor season brings an elevated risk of retinal detachment  particularly for individuals with high myopia, prior eye surgery, or a family history of retinal disease. High-impact summer sports including cricket, football, martial arts, and water sports can cause blunt trauma to the eye, precipitating retinal tears and detachment that require urgent vitreo-retinal surgery.

Symptoms of retinal detachment  seek emergency care immediately

  • A sudden increase in new floaters (spots, threads, or cobwebs in vision)
  • Flashes of light (photopsia) especially in dim lighting
  • A curtain or shadow appearing from the periphery of your vision
  • Sudden, painless loss of vision in one eye

The Eye Foundation's vitreo-retina department offers emergency surgical care for retinal detachment, including pneumatic retinopexy, scleral buckling, and pars plana vitrectomy  with outcomes directly tied to how quickly treatment is initiated. A detached retina is a time-critical emergency  every hour without treatment increases the risk of permanent vision loss.

Uveitis Flare-Ups in Summer

Patients with chronic uvea and ocular inflammation conditions  including autoimmune uveitis associated with ankylosing spondylitis, sarcoidosis, or Behçet's disease  may experience increased flare-up frequency in summer. Systemic stress, travel, infection exposure, and irregular immunosuppressive medication use during holidays can all trigger an acute uveitis episode.

Symptoms of a uveitis flare-up:

  • Sudden eye redness and aching pain
  • Increased photophobia (sensitivity to light)
  • Blurred vision with floating spots
  • A visible change in pupil shape or size

Patients under the care of The Eye Foundation's uvea and ocular inflammation specialists should not self-manage flare-ups with previously prescribed drops without consultation  as the appropriate treatment depends on the type, location, and severity of the current episode.

Patients at The Eye Foundation who are already getting anti-VEGF injections (ranibizumab, bevacizumab) or laser photocoagulation for diabetic retinopathy should not skip their scheduled treatment sessions in the summer. This is because missing treatments can make it harder to control the disease and get rid of macular edema.

The Link Between Glaucoma and the Summer Heat

People with glaucoma who are taking topical eye drops to lower intraocular pressure (IOP) are at higher risk in the summer. Heat can change how strong and how long glaucoma eye drops last A lot of the time, patients don't know that they are keeping their drops in hot places, like cars or near windows. This causes the medicine to break down and stop working, which can cause the IOP to rise without anyone noticing and damage to the optic nerve that gets worse over time. Know your warning signs, maintain your treatment schedules, and do not delay seeking emergency care.

The Eye Foundation with its dedicated departments for vitreo-retina treatment, glaucoma treatment, uvea and ocular inflammation, and neuro-ophthalmology is equipped to handle both planned and emergency eye care needs across Chennai and Coimbatore this summer. Book Appointment.
