Preventing Uveitis Flare-Ups During Monsoon: Tips for Immunity & Eye Protection

Responsive image

Monsoons cool things down with great weather, nice breezes, and relief from the summer heat; however, they also come with an increased risk of eye infections and inflammation. Patients that already have uveitis need to pay very close attention during monsoon season because of the potential increase in flare-ups caused by extreme temperature changes, humidity, and increased exposure to allergens like mold. Proper uveitis care during the monsoon is critical for maintaining stable, healthy eyes.
Uveitis is a condition that causes inflammation of the middle layer of the eye and flare-ups can cause redness, pain, diminished vision, and sensitivity to light. Since monsoon also increases your chances of developing fungal, viral, and bacterial infections, it is imperative that anyone who has had a prior history of uveitis maintain strict precautionary measures.
Why does the Monsoon Increase Flare-ups of Uveitis?
The monsoon season increases:

  • The amount of airborne allergens like dust mites, mold, and fungus
  • The incidence of viral infections such as conjunctivitis and flu
  • The amount of moisture that irritates an already tender eye
  • The reduction of immunity due to extreme weather
  • The heightened risk of exposure to bacteria via rainwater and unhygienic living conditions

All of these can exacerbate the already existing inflammation and lead to flare-up symptoms if appropriate care is not given.

Most Important Area of Uveitis Care During Monsoon

1. Protect your immune system by keeping it healthy. Your immune system is your first line of defense against flare-ups. To maintain a healthy lifestyle and prevent uveitis, you can follow certain steps during the rainy season (monsoon).
2. Include Vitamin-C-rich Foods:
Foods that are rich in vitamin C (oranges, amla (Indian gooseberry), and guava) should be a part of your daily food intake. Foods that are rich in zinc (nuts, seeds, and sprouts) should also be included.
Spices, such as turmeric, pepper, and ginger, should be added to your meals to help with inflammation.
3. Sleep 7-8 Hours a Day:
Get plenty of sleep—7 to 8 hours every night will keep your body healthy and functioning properly.
4. Drink Enough Water:
Drink plenty of water, regardless of the season (hot, cold, or mild). Staying hydrated helps keep your mucous membranes moist and reduces the risk for infections associated with uveitis.
5. Avoid Exposure to Rainwater:
Rainwater may carry pollutants, dust, and bacteria.
If your eyes become wet with rainwater, do NOT rub them;
Wash your face after getting wet, and keep your face clean.
Don't travel in heavy rain if you have already been exposed to the elements and have had irritation in your eyes.
6. Maintain a Strict Eye Hygiene Routine
-Maintaining a strict routine for cleaning your eyes, face, and hands is an important part of preventing infections and maintaining your health during monsoon season.
      - The use of a clean towel daily is recommended.
      - Washing your hands often, especially before touching your eyes, should be a daily ritual.
      - Don't share handkerchiefs, washcloths or makeup;
      - Keep your prescription glasses in a clean and dry area.
7. Follow the Directions of Your Eye Doctor.
Consistently managing your uveitis is essential. DO NOT stop using steroid drops or tablets without first consulting your physician.
Make sure to go to follow-up visits as required.
If your symptoms worsen, do not hesitate to contact your physician immediately.
Have a copy of your emergency prescription when travelling in case you require it.

8. Avoid Allergens

The increase in humidity during monsoon is also associated with increased amounts of fungal growth, mould and dustbags. To avoid this, keep your home dry and well-ventilated, and do not allow damp clothing, carpets and drapes to accumulate.
If you have access to a dehumidifier, use it.
Be sure to clean your fan, air conditioner filter, and bedsheets frequently.

9. Use Protective Eyewear

When you ride a motorcycle or work outside, take extra precautions to protect your eyes by wearing protective eyewear to decrease the chances of having dust and pollution enter your eyes.
Do NOT wear contact lenses in humid weather conditions.
If you must wear contact lenses, be certain to clean your contact lenses thoroughly.

10. Follow a Healthy Eye Care Routine

-Creating and following a specific eye care routine on a daily basis significantly decreases the chance of developing any inflammation in the eyes.
  - Follow your ophthalmologist's advice regarding warm compresses (if prescribed).
  - Minimize the amount of time you are exposed to mobile and laptop screens.
  - Make an effort to blink frequently while using screens, and follow the 20-20-20 rule, i.e. after 20 minutes of screen use, look at something 20 feet away for at least 20 seconds.
  - Avoid self-medication.

Signs of a Uveitis Flare-Up
Call your optometrist immediately if you have any of the signs listed below: Swift Pain in Eyes

  • Redness of the Eyes
  • Blurred or Decreased Vision
  • Sensitivity to Light
  • Floating Spots in Your Vision.

Early intervention can prevent complications like glaucoma, cataracts, and vision loss.

The monsoon season presents a beautiful sight; however, if you are suffering from uveitis, you must be vigilant and exercise caution.
Through proper hygiene practices, maintaining your immunity, and avoiding allergic triggers, uveitis flare-ups can be prevented, and your sight can be preserved.
